Smash Prop. 8 Once and for All!

As Portia De Rossi pointed out to a stunned (since birth) Elizabeth Hasselbeck, in her response to the question 'Why does it matter that same-sex partnerships be called marriages?', to differ one couple's marriage as something less than a marriage (just a partnership) effectively diminishes the foundation of love and trust -- the very same foundation that binds all marriages -- of same-sex marriages. Hasselbeck tried to say "But I don't doubt that you and Ellen are in love...but..." De Rossi piped in "But...it's a different standard of what a marriage is that is being applied here -- a lesser marriage." And Whoopie jumped in before Hasselbeck folded up like an origami.

Of course, defenders of Prop. 8 have made the argument that it's the people's will. Well, time to take the vote away from the people if they can be so easily swayed by lies and superstition. And you know if same-sex marriage are a target, racially mixed marriages are next. Then, age-different marriages and whatever else is the bugga-boo of the day.

sadly, i think this is still just the beginning. the social conservatives just won't let it go and there are just too many people who sadly don't care.

The margin of support for both sides is a mere sliver. It was the twisted media campaign launched by the Catholic, Evangelical, Mormon, and Islamic opposition. The evangelicals described the coming Biblical apocalypse; Islamic quoted declining Western morals; (ie. convert to Islam) the catholics said they had enough trouble with their priests; and the Mormons claimed their would be a massive "homolization" of California because m/m and g/g is way hotter than plain old m/f action. The opposition to Prop 8 argues equality, the pro Prop 8 side can't get away from how hot same sex is. Reason against perversion.

yeah, but in reality california is just one state. other states passed similiar laws by much larger margins. winning california will not win the nation.

Then California will become the 'promised land' of equality and justice for all. Yeah, that can happen, even in America.

Those who don't like it can leave for the wasteland of Arizona. The creative, tolerant, fair-minded, and wealthy will flood into a better California. California will be an island of reason and tolerance in sea of hatred. Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and others will become reserves of poverty and theological fascism. They will be backward and superstitious, savage and uncivilized, lands of slavery and intolerance.

Yeah but as goes CA, goes the Nation... eventually... reluctantly... CA is always ahead of the curve on many, many things, and America slowly catches up, but more often than not, the nation does catch up.

It was truly amazing the outright lies perpetuated here in CA during the Prop H8 campaign. It was embarrassing. The only thing MORE embarrassing were the people actually believing it ("All churches will HAVE to perform gay weddings or lose their sanctions!" "Allowing gay marriage will open up the doors to beastiality!" "Gay marriage will make YOUR CHILD GAY!!")

Un-be-f***ing-lieveable.

Making a broad, overgeneralized, blanket statement there pointless? Can someone remind me what the pot called the kettle? ;)

Really? You don't consider "that's the rightwing in this country for you. they live off of fear. it's all they got." to be... um... the ultimate of hypocrisy?

Making a blanket, factless statement about a large segment of the population deriding them for making... blanket, factless statements about a large segment of the population?

sorry, yonderboy - but pointless is right about that not-so-blanket, not-so factless statement.

Until you have yourself been on the receiving end of the bigoted, unjustified hate, you'll just never understand.

Lets make it clear : certainly not every republican is a rightwing extremist, just like not every democrat is a bleeding heart liberal. But the rightwing segment in this country, just like their liberal rivals, have a set agenda - and for those that identify as far right of the center, denying gay rights is right up there at the top. It's a sad reality.

See, that's what I'm talking about. By saying "Until you have yourself been on the receiving end of the bigoted, unjustified hate, you'll just never understand." you are making HUGE (and incorrect) judgements about me.

And *MY* point potentially needs to be clarified. pointless stated that the right-wing lives off of fear. It's the "fear" part that I'm objecting to. Stating that all right-wingers are fear-mongerers is inherently wrong. There are PLENTY of right-wingers who don't found their beliefs, or the spreading thereof, on fear. Just like not all lefties try to use pretentious morality (i.e. saying things like "If you hate gays then you're a horrible person") to spread THEIR beliefs.

Saying all right-wingers use fear is, by definition, bigotry against the right-wing. That is my point.

Now... in this particular case... sure. In fact, I'd say of course. But my objection was to "that's the rightwing in this country for you. they live off of fear. it's all they got."

If the statement was "the attack by the right on Prop 8 was grounded in ignorance and the appeal to the fears of the population at large" then sure, of course. But "that's the rightwing in this country for you. they live off of fear. it's all they got." is, to me, offensive. And most definitely hypocritical.

And no, I don't consider that nitpicking or PC BS or any of that jazz. There's a huge different between a blanket statement and a legitimately qualified, topic-appropriate statement.

I hope I've explained myself properly lopaw.
