Just trying to do my part to get this section of the board rolling. I'm inviting everyone to share their views on the music scene today.
As far as I'm concerned Mainstream music on the whole is crap. It seems to be incredibly and increasingly manufactured and formulaic. From the pop tarts to gangstas, originality and creativity seems to be dead.
The industry seems to be all about making money and not music. It is quickly becoming another channel for advertisers to hock their products even moreso than before. Don't get me started on MTV, and I live in Canada.
I feel sorry for today's youth, since artists seem to be only interested in taking their money. Also image seems to be greatly overshadowing music and true talent is forced underground and barred from being allowed to expose thier music to the ignorant masses.
I dunno. I used to think the music scene today was beyond repair but recently (well, in england anyway) alot of good music is making a comeback. Rock music seems to be a big seller once more with only the occasional pop pap slipping through. That said I went to new york in december and the music scene there seems....not so good. Maybe it was where i was outside the TRL studios but most of it seems to be the same old garbage and from past experiances they play em 1000 more times than they would over here.
Unfortunatly, music has always been about image more than talent. Sometimes we get lucky and talented people sneak through. For the most part, artists have either had to be very attractive or they had to have a gimmick that people would buy.
I think we can all agree that Britany Spears can't sing. She is a packaged product with all the help of "state of the art" music studios and she STILL can't sing. However, if anyone here knows the name Fabian, he was a soda jerk in the 50's with no musical talent what so ever. He was discovered by a talent agent who had never heard him sing a note and he was made into a star. The greatest musicians in the world are people you'll more likely than not, never hear of.
I don't believe music today is any worse than it used to be. Maybe there is a little more packaging, but what it comes down to is... do you like a song, or don't you? It's a matter of individual taste, because the real talent behind what you're hearing probably isn't the artist on the CD cover.
The trend I've seen in rock seems to be these annoying pop punk bands with singers who have these high winy voices. The Simple Plans, Good Charlottes and Sum 41s of today about make me sick. There seems to be a little bit of light with bands like Audioslave, Fall Out Boy, Strata, Shinedown and Atomship floating around. I listen to mainly classic rock. Guys my father liked: Beatles, CCR, Joe Walsh, Allman Brothers, Three Dog Night, Van Halen, Mountain, SRV and Clapton.
Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way about music. Currently garbage. I'd actually say the same thing about almost every form of art. I think maybe it's been compromised. The artistic integrity has been compromised. And I really think that there aren't any creative minds on the scene. It's all imitation. But, you know, there are always the exceptions few and far between.
